Inca Trail Permits

Due to regulations from the Peruvian government and the competent authority SERNAMP (National Service of Natural Protected Areas by the State), we adopt and share the prohibition of plastic use in Machu Picchu and throughout the Inca Trail network to preserve the beauty and natural habitat of the varied flora and fauna of the Machu Picchu Historical Sanctuary.

At Peru Top Experience, we are committed to the environment and offer five recommendations to reduce the use of plastic in Machu Picchu and on the Inca Trail, following the principles of “leave no trace” by not leaving trash:

  • Bring reusable water bottles: Instead of buying plastic bottled water, bring your own reusable canteen or hydration pack (CamelBak). Peru Top Experience provides a personalized water bottle for Inca Trail expeditions.
  • Use reusable food containers: The handling of food on the Inca Trail is a quality that impresses all our visitors. We use reusable containers and biodegradable cloth bags in our Boxlunches, significantly reducing the use of plastic bags.
  • Use reusable cloth bags: Bring your own reusable cloth bags for shopping and transporting items during your visit to Machu Picchu. Avoid using plastic bags provided by shops and vendors, especially in Aguas Calientes and Cusco.
  • Use reusable straws: Refuse disposable plastic straws when offered and bring your own reusable straw if necessary.
  • Responsible waste disposal: Our trained Inca Trail team is responsible for differentiating solid waste and complies with all waste treatment parameters in the Inca Trail Network.

Inca Trail and Machupicchu plastic-free

Before embarking on this exciting journey along the Inca Trail, it is important to ensure that agencies are approved as Inca Trail Operators. The Peruvian government regulates access to the Inca Trail to preserve its natural beauty and protect its invaluable cultural heritage. Therefore, a special permit is required for this incredible journey, as is choosing duly authorized agencies.

Peru Top Experience is proud to announce that our agency has been duly accredited by the competent authorities as an Inca Trail operator. With years of experience and a specialized team, we are prepared to offer you an unforgettable experience as you explore the ancient Inca paths. By choosing our agency, you not only ensure a safe and well-organized trip but also contribute to the preservation of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our trained guides will accompany you every step of the way, sharing their deep knowledge of the history and culture of the ancient Incas.

Prepare for an unforgettable adventure on the Inca Trail with Peru Top Experience! Contact us today to start planning your next trip. We look forward to accompanying you on this extraordinary journey!

What was the Inca Trail like before?

During the months of July and August, from 1996 to 2001, around 1,500 people started the Inca Trail route every day (approximately 1,000 tourists and 500 porters). At that time, there were no regulations, and many hikers camped wherever they wanted, used the archaeological sites as restrooms, and left trash along the trail. The Inca Trail began to suffer high levels of pollution and degradation of the local flora and fauna. The situation reached a critical point, so much so that UNESCO threatened to withdraw its World Heritage status.

To protect this important legacy, the Peruvian government introduced new regulations for the Inca Trail in 2002. These rules limited the number of hikers allowed per day and prohibited tourists from hiking the trail independently. Now, only authorized agencies can operate on the Inca Trail, ensuring more responsible and sustainable tourism, helping to preserve this sacred path for future generations.

Machu Picchu: the first carbon-neutral wonder

Machu Picchu, the legendary Inca citadel in the Peruvian Andes, now holds the title of the first wonder to receive the Carbon Neutral certification. This recognition highlights its efforts to preserve the natural environment and combat climate change.

Thanks to innovative measures, Machu Picchu provides visitors with a tourist experience in harmony with nature, promoting environmental conservation and serving as an inspiration for a more sustainable future.
